Of the many, many short relationships and dates that the core four have in Sex and the City, there are some that end for unremarkable reasons, a few that end for pretty terrible reasons, and then those that end for reasons that have fans cheering for the person ending things. These are the breakups that just make sense, and have fans wondering why they took so long to end things in the first place.

And even when some of these pairs did end up reconnecting further down the line, the reasons for ending things still make sense – and sometimes, still break fans’ hearts.

10 Charlotte Can’t Stand How Brad Kisses

Brad seems to be the perfect guy, until Charlotte realizes that his way of ‘kissing’ seems to be aggressively mouthing and licking most of her face – something that few people would really enjoy. He’s also unwilling to really change his approach, and Charlotte decides that she just can’t take any more. It makes sense, too. A lack of physical chemistry or ability to connect on a physical level – especially for something like kissing – is a sign that things just aren’t going to work out.

9 Carrie Dumps Wade For Acting Like A Teenager

Wade seems like a lot of fun, at first, and Carrie is even on board with him living with his parents (given that they have an amazing penthouse, of course). However, it soon becomes clear that he is still acting like a teenager – lying to his parents, and lying about Carrie being a bad influence when they catch the two of them smoking weed. Carrie is right to realize that being with someone immature and dishonest just isn’t going to work – and fans were quietly cheering her as she claimed ‘her’ weed to take home as she left.

8 Samantha Left Harvey Over The Housekeeper

This storyline was a problematic one, as it involves Samantha’s boyfriend, Harvey, employing a Thai housekeeper, Sum… who has an uncomfortably servile attitude around him (that also plays into some deeply problematic Asian stereotypes).

She also changes completely when Harvey is not around, yelling at Sam, and then lying about her being physically abusive. Samantha was entirely right to run away from this situation, although really, fans wanted to see her leave a whole lot sooner.

7 Miranda Left Steve For Trying To Push Them Into Parenthood

In one of Miranda and Steve’s multiple breakups, Miranda ends things because Steve is trying to push them to become parents, and even gets a puppy (without discussing it first) and then leaves Miranda to do all the hard work. Miranda, who already didn’t want to take on more responsibility, was entirely right to break this one off. Yes, they make it work later, but everything about this situation was a problem.

6 Carrie Just Couldn’t Marry Aidan

Carrie thought that she wanted to marry Aidan, and to be with him for the rest of her life, but it became quickly apparent that this wasn’t the case. In fact, she couldn’t even make herself wear her engagement ring on her finger – and not for any practical reason, simply because she didn’t want to see it there. Clearly, they were not meant to be, and simply not being in love, not wanting the same commitment, is an excellent reason to end things.

5 Samantha Couldn’t Trust Richard

Samantha and Richard seemed like a great pair, at first. Powerful, capable, sexually adventurous, and well-matched… things still didn’t end well, as Samantha caught Richard cheating. She didn’t actually leave him for this, and decided to forgive him and give it another try, but realized eventually that she just didn’t trust him anymore. It was a sad moment, but the right decision, as trust is absolutely fundamental to a relationship.

4 Natasha Caught Big and Carrie Cheating

Natasha was set up as someone to be hated (and Carrie certainly did), but fans eventually felt quite sorry for her, especially as she actually caught Carrie in the act with Big, when Big was married to Natasha.

In terms of a good reason to end a marriage, catching a husband en flagrante with his ex has to be up there in the top tier. Who could blame her, especially as this wasn’t a one time thing, but an extended affair.

3 Trey Wanted A Sexless Marriage (Where Charlotte Slept With The Gardener)

Trey and Charlotte’s marriage was essentially awful from start to finish, and there are so many good reasons for Charlotte to eventually get divorced. There was the problem that Trey couldn’t perform sexually with her, and that he then revealed (to the uber-conservative Charlotte, who would never consider non-monogamy as a viable option) that he would be fine simply never having sex, and having Charlotte sleep with the gardener instead. An even bigger red flag is that it seems this is essentially the norm for his family. Finding out that they were also, in Charlotte’s words “reproductively challenged” may have been the final thing that did it, but essentially any element of their marriage was a good reason for it to end.

2 Aleksander Had No Time For Carrie

Carrie and Aleksander Petrovsky also had a whole slew of reasons to end their relationship, but the big one was that he simply kept abandoning her. He would get absorbed in his own work and ignore her, and then expect her to be around and emotionally available to him whenever he needed it – even when that meant missing her own event with fans in Paris. Their final fight and his (supposedly) unintentional slap was clearly the final straw, and Carrie had every reason to go.

1 Samantha & Smith Just Ran Their Course

One of the saddest parts of the Sex and the City movie was when Samantha and Smith ended their relationship – and while it wasn’t for a big dramatic reason, it was for a good one: they just no longer worked. Smith was working all the time, and never had time to see her, and Samantha was frustrated and lonely, eating her feelings, shopping her feelings, and flying to New York whenever she could. Their decision to end things, and Sam’s decision to end things in order to put her happiness first, was one of the most mature breakups on the show.
