The Mario Kart franchise is one of the most popular of all time, with the games being both incredible fun for the entire family, yet equally as competitive and difficult. Throughout the history of this game, there has been a wide range of tracks in order to keep the game fresh and challenging.

While some of these tracks have been very simple and accessible to all skill levels, others have been a lot tougher. There have been some incredibly hard courses throughout the history of the series, and these are the courses that even the greatest players have found difficult to master.

10 Broken Pier (Mario Kart: Super Circuit)

Anytime that a track doesn’t feature any bumpers or guiderails, it instantly becomes very difficult, and that is what made the Broken Pier track a really hard one in Mario Kart: Super Circuit. This has a lot of missing guard rails, and, with Boo often popping up to provide a distraction, this can become a true nightmare to try and navigate.

Gamers have to be incredibly careful with every turn they take, and any attempts at jumps are done so at a gamer’s own peril. This is one curse that often left people very frustrated, and is rightfully one of the toughest of all time.

9 Moonview Highway (Mario Kart Wii)

The Mario Kart series absolutely loves throwing in as many obstacles as possible to make things tough for the gamer. But, when those obstacles are huge cars and trucks that are all in different lanes, things can get a lot more difficult for people.

Avoiding all of the cars isn’t easy, and this only gets harder as the game goes on and people smartly plant different items to create more hazards around. Only the truly daring and skilled can weave through traffic and beat the competition on this course.

8 Wario’s Gold Mine (Mario Kart Wii)

Another track from Mario Kart Wii that is incredibly difficult is Wario’s Gold Mine. This one starts out simple enough, but, once you enter the mine itself, there are tons of ways this can go wrong. Starting out with the bats that attack you on entry, which can slow down any momentum a player has when entering.

But, it is the element of zipping in and out of the different cars, trying not to get caught by them that makes this one tough. Gamers then have to opt whether or not to take the shortcut, which requires perfect timing with a minecart always being nearby here to cause huge problems.

7 Rosalina’s Ice World (Mario Kart 7)

Rosalina from the Mario Galaxy franchise was given her own track in Mario Kart 7, and it certainly wasn’t easy. Any time the game creates an ice track, it always brings an element of difficulty due to its slippery nature, and this one was no different.

With lots of different ways to slip and slide, this Nintendo DS game can be very frustrating for people. There are tons of areas where gamers can fall, having to start again—especially during the big hill that players have to slide around, and even under the ice—there are plenty of obstacles to cause frustration.

6 Dino Dino Jungle (Mario Kart: Double Dash)

Aesthetically, this is one of the nicest tracks that has ever been created for a Mario Kart game, yet, at the same time, it’s also one of the hardest. There are a lot of narrow moments to navigate through here, and one wrong twist or turn can lead to someone falling into the water below.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this track, so anyone who isn’t great with corners and handling isn’t going to find this one fun. With added hazards along the way to trip people up, even more, this track combines into one of the trickiest ever.

5 Mushroom City (Mario Kart: Double Dash)

In a very similar manner to Moonview Highway, this track is surrounded by a city setting, with the difficulty coming from the number of other vehicles that have to be avoided throughout. However, this one has things like Bomb Cars which will explode when touched, making it even harder to deal with.

Those cars can also end up being exploded without touching them either, as someone else throwing a shell into them can cause that to happen, which can lead to a player being damaged without knowing it is coming.

4 Bowser Castle (Mario Kart DS)

There have been several Bowser’s Castle-style tracks throughout the history of this franchise, paying tribute to the legendary Nintendo villain. But, this particular version is one of the most unique and difficult, with so many different obstacles, and a lot of moving elements to cause confusion.

There are moving platforms at one point over lava, without any barriers that lead to gamers falling and burning if they make a wrong call. Then, there’s the difficult rotating rod which will send gamers on a much longer path, easily putting them behind the pack.

3 Donut Plains 3 (Super Mario Kart)

The hardest track within the original game comes in the form of Donut Plains 3, which was a painstakingly frustrating track at times. While it might not be as flashy as later tracks, this SNES version was still very difficult, with countless Monty Moles popping out at random to cause major problems.

There are tons of them within this game, and, whenever they pop up, they can cause huge issues as players have to frantically try and avoid them, which can easily take someone off course. Not to mention how tight some of the turns are throughout.

2 Bowser’s Castle (Mario Kart 8)

This is one incredibly tough track that is absolutely jam-packed with various hazards that make this really hard to be prepared for. There is something constantly happening within this track that doesn’t give the player a single second to rest and just enjoy the drive.

Whether it’s fireballs, laser beams, anti-gravity, or the incredibly tight turns themselves that force people to slow down in order to not crash, this is a hard one to win. Gamers have to be focused fully throughout this course, and that really does make it a difficult one.

1 Rainbow Road (Mario Kart Wii)

There’s no doubt about what the toughest Mario Kart track of all time is, and that is the legendary Rainbow Road. It’s the one that even the greatest players can find difficult and while there have been several versions of this course, the Mario Kart Wii version was easily the hardest.

The lack of barriers on the side of this track is what makes it so tough. One wrong move and you’re sent plummeting off into space, which can allow everyone to overtake you. Add in the difficult twists and turns, the decision to use or avoid the speed boosts, and the wave of the track which can lead to some really hard jumps, this is one very hard course.
