The Sith are some of the most iconic villains in cinema history. The Star Wars universe has seen a lot of dark side warriors join the ranks of the Sith Order over the years and their costumes often match the cruelty within. There are a number of Sith who truly know what it takes to personify villainy.
Of course, the parallel to the Jedi, dark robes are not the only apparel in a Sith’s wardrobe. From their armor to their menacing helmets and deadly weaponry, this group of bad guys has some of the most fascinatingly designed costuming in the galaxy far, far away.
10 Asajj Ventress
Asajj Ventress has flirted with being a member of the Sith for a while. Once an apprentice to Count Dooku, she has since evolved into becoming a wielder of both the light and dark side of the Force. Her costume has evolved with that transition.
Her final form is as a Sith bounty hunter, with her red lightsabers and combat-style mask. It’s a style that both plays upon some of the most famous bounty hunters in the galaxy and clearly pays homage to the Sith past the character holds.
9 Son
Part of the very mythology of the Sith, while the Son did have some redeeming qualities he is mostly created from pure evil. The character was contrasted well with both the Father and the Daughter, with each of the three family members representing a different facet of the Force.
The Son wasn’t known for wielding lightsabers, but the high collar, face markings, reds and blacks, and shoulder pads all signified Sith power and strength. The costume was simple enough yet moved like a shadow, becoming representative of the darkness within,
8 Darth Maul
Darth Maul’s costume at the start of his journey was very simple. It was significant of his status as a Sith apprentice and learner, with the basic robes and tunic evolving over his time as a Sith. His injury would majorly change his look.
After losing his legs, the robotic prosthetics became a part of the character’s overall design. The tunic style clothing remained but it was combined with a harsh armor-like design during the height of the Clone Wars, before becoming something far more basic towards the end of his life.
7 Darth Malak
Darth Malak is one of the characters fans know from the Old Republic era. Perhaps forgotten, he is still one of the most powerful Sith Lords in all of the Legends universe. His costume definitely reflected his bloodthirsty nature.
A rare use of red in the costuming itself dominated his attire. With accents of black throughout and a harsh metallic belt, it was completed with the character’s head markings and his injured face, which he covered using a mouthguard.
6 Kylo Ren
Hugely inspired by Darth Vader, Kylo Ren has an intimidating presence thanks to his black and silver costume. The robes are an interesting choice as they echo back to Maul’s own apprentice look, with hints of other Sith Lords throughout history.
The mask itself is totally unique but once again draws inspiration from Darth Vader and some of the other Sith who chose to cover their face. While not hiding any kind of facial deformity until he is later scarred, the mask has become a piece of useful fear-mongering and an iconic piece in its own right.
5 Darth Bane
Darth Bane is one of the most historically significant Sith in all of Star Wars. His look has shifted a little throughout his different interpretations, but his costume seen by Yoda in a vision is perhaps the most notable of his looks.
Almost styled on a samurai warrior, the armor is both practical and intimidating. Darth Bane once again utilizes a helmet, one with a mouthguard quite similar to Darth Vader. Overall it’s a unique design that captures the ancient nature of the character.
4 Darth Malgus
Early concept art revealed the character of Darth Malgus, who would debut in the world of the Old Republic. As the leader of a new age of Sith, he had to be destructive in his presence, which plays on Vader and Palpatine. Darth Malgus’ cloak and mask combo fit the bill well.
Utilizing robotic elements due to his severe disfiguration at the hands of Bastila Shan, Malgus’ look is extremely memorable. As currently one of the most well-known leaders during the Old Republic, it’s an instantly recognizably horrifying design. Practical and deadly.
3 Darth Revan
Darth Revan is one of the most well-known of the Sith. His armor and cloak combination has gone on to play into the looks of so many others within the Sith Order. His story is legendary, as is his own contribution to the history of this dark group.
From the shoulder pads to the style of the helmet, each element plays into the knight aesthetic. It’s definitely striking and is a design that is maintained throughout his various appearances in both Legends and canon.
2 Darth Nihilus
Darth Nihilus’ design is extremely basic on the surface. A long black cloak covers most of the body and it’s difficult to see any kind of armor underneath. In many ways that should be seen as boring compared to the other Sith.
Yet the mask of Nihilus is what really strikes fear into the hearts of the Jedi. It appears soulless in its nature and makes up for any lack of exciting visual design within the rest of the costume. The end result is that of a shadowy ghost, trained in the dark arts.
1 Darth Vader
Darth Vader is the most well-known and recognizable Sith Lord in all of Star Wars mythology. His robotic nature, his lack of humanity beneath the mask, the striking red lightsaber, and the layers to the design all contribute to this cinema icon.
It’s a great piece of costume design, brought together thanks to the concept art of Ralph McQuarrie. It’s easily the piece of Sith armor that has gone on to inspire many others throughout the franchise and will likely continue to outshine future costumes.
