With two seasons of Daredevil and one season of Jessica Jones on the books, the Netflix corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is fleshing out with a number of supporting characters. This will only continue in the fall when Luke Cage season 1 debuts. With so many characters being developed, fans are already speculating about which supporting characters will appear in the upcoming crossover miniseries The Defenders.

We now have a confirmation on at least one of the supporting characters, however. Actor Eka Darville, who played Jessica Jones’ (Krysten Ritter) neighbor and semi-unwilling sidekick Malcolm in Jessica Jones season 1, revealed that he will appear in the upcoming Marvel/Netflix crossover miniseries in some capacity.

While at the Supanova Pop Culture Expo in Melbourne, Australia, Spoiler TV caught up with Darville and asked him whether he would be involved with The Defenders based on how close Malcolm and Jessica seemed at the end of Jessica Jones season one. Darville admitted that he will be in the miniseries when it starts filming later this year, though he doesn’t yet know how large his part will be:

Spoiler TV:Malcolm and Jessica were quite close by the end of Jessica Jones. So I was wondering if you know yet whether or not you’ll appear in ‘The Defenders’?

Eka:Yes. I will be in it. I’m not sure how much yet but I will be in it.

It makes sense that Darville wouldn’t know the exact extent of his Defenders role since the miniseries is still early in pre-production. It was only recently announced that the Daredevil season 2’s showrunners will oversee The Defenders, and the series will need to work in characters from Luke Cage and the upcoming Iron Fist too. That’s in addition to other possible supporting characters who might show up such as Foggy Nelson, Claire Temple, Trish Walker and may even Frank Castle/The Punisher.

It’s likely that Darville will only have a small part in the Defenders miniseries – though given how well he played up the role of the spy in season one of Jessica Jones, he might help Jessica scope out whatever the problem is. Of course, given how season one of Jessica Jones ended with him seeming to help Jessica with the running of Alias Investigations, he may have a larger role than one might think. It’s unlikely that we’ll see him getting a surprise superhero origin and taking on the big bad of the miniseries directly, regardless.

Some fans might argue that the miniseries could get crowded if all of the supporting characters from the various shows make an appearance, especially with The Defenders using a miniseries format instead of a full 13-episode season like the other Marvel/Netflix shows have used. It might leave more unanswered questions of Malcolm and the other supporting characters didn’t show up, though. Including supporting characters in smaller roles (and a few, like The Punisher and Trish Walker, in larger roles) could help to flesh out the miniseries and keep it from existing within a bubble inside of the MCU.
