There have been some truly unbelievable reality shows on television, from a show highlighting bratty 16-year-olds ordering their wealthy parents around while planning their extravagant birthday parties, to one where a middle-class construction worker pretends to be a wealthy bachelor, fooling a group of women as they try to woo him. Like a train wreck, however, viewers just can’t look away. Which means each year, reality shows with even wilder concepts come out. And now with streaming services like Netflix joining the category, the race to ridiculousness continues.

So which are the most unbelievable reality shows that are currently streaming or on the air? There are so many from which to choose, but here’s a list of 10.

10 Labor of Love

This show takes the idea of finding love to completely uncharted territory and beyond what a reality show should ever be about. Imagine it’s the Bachelorette except the woman is auditioning men to not only potentially date and get engaged to, but to fast forward straight to having a family together.

Yes, the idea behind the show, which is hosted by Sex and the City’s Kristin Davis, is to help the 41-year-old woman find the man who is willing to start a family right away with a lady whose biological clock is ticking.

9 Love is Blind

The expression “love is blind” refers to the fact that when one person loves another, they don’t see their imperfections. But this show takes it literally by having singles “date” one another from pods divided by walls that let them talk but not see one another. As they form bonds over hours and hours of conversation, they can decide if they like one person from the group enough to propose.

Then and only then do they meet in person, go on vacation, move in together, and start planning their wedding that might end in I do…or might not. Seriously.

8 Too Hot to Handle

Netflix has been pulling out the big, and totally awkward, guns trying to stand out in the reality show world. To do this, they have had to come up with some really unique concepts that haven’t been done before. And boy, have they delivered.

In this series, a group of 20-somethings are sent to live in a house together where they must try not to have any physical contact with one another. Every kiss or sexual touch puts them farther away from the prize. If only they had waited to film after the outbreak of the pandemic, winning would have been so much easier!

7 90 Day Fiance

It’s one of those shows that you just can’t stop watching and has captured the eyeballs of viewers who can’t look away. The premise? One person agrees to marry another from a foreign country, getting them a 90-day visa to enter the U.S., after which the two lovebirds can try their hand at a relationship that isn’t long-distance until it’s time to walk down the aisle.

After the three-month period, they either get married or they don’t. It’s great to see those U.S. visas being granted to people who really need them! (Insert sarcasm here.)

6 Dating Naked

What happens if you tried to strip yourself of anything and everything holding you back before meeting someone new? Your insecurities, your inhibitions, your stress, and worry. Oh, and your clothes. Yes, this show sees singles dating while completely in the buff. No pasties or leaves covering their private parts. Just completely in the buff, like Adam and Eve.

It sounds like something no logical person would ever want to watch but the show lasted three seasons. And while it ended in 2016, VH1 hasn’t fully closed the door on the concept. So we can totally see this one getting resurrected.

5 Naked and Afraid

Like Dating Naked, contestants on this reality show don’t necessarily have to form a romantic bond, nor are they supposed to. Instead, a man and a woman are partnered up and sent out into the wild where they must try and survive with not even the clothes on their back (because there are none), though they do get to bring one item of their choosing, like a fire starter or knife.

Once on a remote island, they must forage for food and find a source of water as they stay alive with no clothes (and inevitably camera crews around them 24/7, of course).

4 Botched

If anyone said 20 or 30 years ago that people would be watching a reality show about two plastic surgeons fixing up botched plastic surgery jobs, it would have been laughable. But alas, this is exactly what Botched is, and people have fallen in love with the show.

Someone comes in with a plastic surgery job that was not done right and the doctors proceed to highlight what went wrong and how they plan to fix it, then do the job while displaying every detail (like, EVERY detail) in all its gory glory.

3 The Circle

Described as Big Brother meets Catfish, this Netflix show both mocks modern youth culture who rely too much on forging digital connections and uses it to teach valuable lessons. Contestants are placed in apartments in the same building, but can only communicate with one another only through text-based messages. Each person offers a curated profile about themselves that the others can see, complete with photos.

However, is the person you’re seeing on the screen and the one talking to you the same person? Or are you getting catfished? It’s totally weird to watch people dictate messages to a voice AI and try to keep themselves busy all day. But it’s oddly entertaining, too.

2 The Big Flower Fight

There are tons of reality shows where people compete in challenges involving cooking, home renovations, dancing, even building things like Legos. So why not flowers? In this reality competition series, which debuted on Netflix in May 2020, contestants include florists, sculptors, and garden designers who complete to make beautiful floral arrangements.

The winner gets their prizeworthy sculpture displayed at London’s Royal Botanical Gardens and a pretty big boost in their credibility as a talented florist.

1 Bride & Prejudice

You know what really helps when two people are in love but their families don’t approve? Shedding the spotlight on that fact and hanging everyone out to dry as you film a reality show about it!

This show, airing both U.S. and Australian versions, does just that, following engaged couples as they plan their wedding…without the help of their disapproving family members. Can anyone say “awkward!”
