Warning: contains spoilers for The Thing #1!

Marvel’s Spider-Man has a reputation among comic book fans for having the absolute worst luck in the Marvel universe. Peter Parker’s life is defined by his pain over the decades; he’s lost loved ones, failed his friends and family, and had his life turned upside-down by multiple supervillains. But there’s one more superhero who’s life is considerably worse than Peter Parker: the Fantastic Four’s Ben Grimm, better known as the Thing.

As a scrawny teenager who was frequently bullied and considered an outcast at school, Peter Parker’s life was hard enough. But after his fateful spider-bite and an even-more fateful selfish decision that directly resulted in his uncle’s death, Peter’s life launched into a downward spiral from which it rarely recovers. He continually lagged behind in his studies, he abandoned his friends, and he ultimately failed to save the love of his life Gwen Stacy from death at the hands of a supervillain…all because of his duties as Spider-Man.

But as sad and miserably as Peter Parker’s life has become, it pales in comparison to the life of Benjamin Grimm. Long before Grimm became the Thing, he grew up in poverty on the streets of New York. His older brother died in a gang fight when he was only eight, and after his parents died, he was raised by his aunt and uncle (much like Spider-Man). But his problems only got worse when he flew Reed Richards’ experimental rocket, leading to his transformation into the Thing.

As the Thing, Ben Grimm remains the only member of the Fantastic Four who can’t control his powers; he remains forever trapped in his orange, rocky form. This has caused Ben to resent his lot in life, leading to bursts of anger toward anyone whom he deems even the slightest threat. In The Thing #1, this leads to an emotional break-up with his fiancee, Alicia Masters (a famed blind sculptor), who leave Ben alone to sulk. Ben has felt inadequate when it comes to maintaining relationships in his life, believing himself to be an ugly, misshapen mess who only has friends and loved one through blind luck.

Ben has tried to reverse his appearance multiple times, often through the use of one of Reed Richards’ devices. Although the smartest man in the world, Mr. Fantastic has failed to cure his friend’s condition with every attempt, causing Ben to doubt his friends in addition to himself. Spider-Man, for all of his troubles, can take off his costume and walk among other people as Peter Parker, but the Thing can never remove his mask.
