The two may have started out hating each other, but by the end of The Vampire Diaries, they were deeply in love. 8 Season 1 – Enemies To Friends

It’s easy to forget that Damon wasn’t always desperately in love with Elena, and when they first met, he was willing to let her die on more than one occasion. All he cared about was getting Katherine out of the tomb, but things changed when he realized Katherine had been free all along.

Elena and Damon begin to bond as the season goes on, and they team up to save Stefan when he becomes addicted to human blood. They form a strong friendship, and Damon even kisses Katherine in the season finale, thinking that it’s Elena.

7 Season 2 – Damon’s Unrequited Love

Damon’s feelings for Elena become clear as day during the second season, and he admits that he has fallen in love with his brother’s girlfriend. Elena doesn’t return the sentiment, and Damon snaps Jeremy’s neck after she rejects him, bringing their friendship to an abrupt end.

Damon is determined to win back Elena’s trust and he is eventually successful. Damon is still Damon, meaning he continues to lash out when things don’t go his way, but Elena offers him forgiveness and kisses him in the finale when he’s on the brink of death.

6 Season 3 – Elena Falls For Damon (But Chooses Stefan)

Season 3 is when Damon and Elena are given a chance to shine. After Stefan is forced to leave Mystic Falls and help Klaus create his hybrids, Damon and Elena do everything they can to save him. But there reaches a point when all hope seems lost, and the two of them start to take comfort in the newfound bond they’ve formed in his absence.

Their developing relationship felt like a betrayal to Stefan, and Elena kept trying to repress her feelings for his brother. They eventually come out in full, right around the time Stefan starts to revert back to his true self. Despite everything that happened between Damon and Elena, Elena chooses to be with Stefan just moments before she drowns under Wickery Bridge.

5 Season 4 – The Sire Bond Complicates Things

During the first minute of The Vampire Diaries Season 4, Elena discovers that she had Damon’s blood in her system when she died. Not only was this plot refreshing, but it was vital to showcase Damon’s unconditional love for Elena. Elena becomes drastically different as a vampire, and she leaves Stefan for his brother. But the show was never going to give fans exactly what they wanted, and after they sleep together, viewers discover that Elena is sired to Damon.

Damon begins to doubt Elena’s love for him, which wasn’t hard given that he already thought it was too good to be true. Elena’s emotions are turned off following Jeremy’s death, and what’s real and what isn’t becomes even blurrier than before. It’s not until the very end of the season that all is finally revealed. In a fan-favorite scene, Elena confesses her love for Damon after the sire bond is finally broken. Their kiss in front of the fireplace is still one of the best moments of the entire show, and the love triangle comes to a permanent end.

4 Season 5 – Officially A Couple (On And Off)

After years of buildup, Damon and Elena were an official couple in The Vampire Diaries Season 5. It was a whole new world for them, and even though it was odd to finally see them together, it also felt natural.

But no matter how much they love each other, it’s never smooth sailing for Damon and Elena. They attempt to break up for several different reasons, but it never quite sticks. The two always found their way back to each other, and even Damon’s death wouldn’t be able to keep them apart.

3 Season 6 – Damon Is Presumed Dead, Elena Erases Her Memories

Elena is so distraught over losing Damon that she guilts Lucas into giving her special herbs to hallucinate him. There comes a point when it isn’t enough, and Elena asks Alaric to compel away her love for Damon. Little did anyone know, neither Damon nor Bonnie were dead, and they were actually trapped in a prison world.

Damon and Elena’s reunion might not have been what fans were hoping for, but their entire storyline was proof of how powerful their love is. Elena only remembered the bad things that Damon had done, yet she still couldn’t shake him. It took a bit of time, but Elena fell in love with Damon all over again.

2 Season 7 – Elena Is In A Supernatural Coma

Because of Nina Dobrev’s decision to leave the series, Elena spent the entirety of The Vampire Diaries Season 7 in a supernatural coma. Her life is tethered to Bonnie’s, and as long as Bonnie is alive, Elena can’t wake up.

Viewers had never seen Damon without Elena there to guide him, and the show felt off without the central couple. Between Damon thinking he burned Elena’s body and him hooking up with someone else, it was a hard season for Delena shippers.

1 Season 8 – Damon And Elena Live Happily Ever After As Humans

Elena was only in the last few minutes of the series finale, but she played a huge role throughout the final season. Sybil had manipulated Damon’s memories and made him forget all about Elena. But Damon’s love for her was one thing that could never be erased, as it proved to be too powerful to tamper with.

When Bonnie breaks the spell and wakes Elena up, she and Damon reunite. They take the cure and become human together, which is what Elena had always wanted. A flash-forward shows Damon and Elena holding hands in the afterlife, and fans were ecstatic to see the wedding ring on her finger.
