Playing Fox Mulder on The X-Files made David Duchovny a household name, but he’s had a variety of movie and TV roles since the original series ended. Duchovny’s Mulder is truly one of TV’s all-time greatest characters, to the point where losing Mulder after season 7 sent The X-Files down a path leading to cancellation. Smart, loyal, and possessing a quick wit, Mulder quipped his way into the hearts of millions of fans. Sometimes playing such an iconic character can ironically doom an actor’s future prospects, but Duchovny has had no such issues finding work.

Of course, while Mulder made Duchovny a star, it was by no means his first time on either the big or small screens. Duchovny had recently appeared alongside Brad Pitt in the serial killer thriller Kalifornia, starred with Mimi Rogers in the religious apocalypse film The Rapture, and even appeared in the family comedy Beethoven. Most notably, Duchovny had already began his “career” with the fictional FBI, portraying trans FBI agent Denise Bryson on Twin Peaks in what was an incredibly progressive storyline for its time.

While Duchovny’s hopes of becoming an A-list movie star after his first X-Files departure didn’t work out, his career since 2002’s original X-Files series finale has by no means been subpar. Here’s everything he’s been up to.

X-Files: What David Duchovny Has Done Since The Original Series

David Duchovny’s first movie role following The X-Files season 9 came in 2002’s artsy, Hollywood-set Steven Soderbergh movie Full Frontal, playing Gus. Also in 2002, Duchovny guest starred as vain weatherman Johnny Volcano on the sitcom Life with Bonnie. In 2003, Duchovny guest starred as Carrie’s high school boyfriend Jeremy on Sex and the City, as well as voiced the titular character in the video game XIII. Moving on to 2004, Duchovny played love interest Jeremy in the comedy Connie and Carla, then directed, wrote, and played the lead in House of D, which also starred Anton Yelchin and Robin Williams. He also returned to voice Mulder for the X-Files video game Resist or Serve.

In 2005, Duchovny voiced the lead character in the video game Area 51, which also featured aliens and government conspiracies. He also played male lead Tom Pollack in the romantic comedy Trust the Man, and lead Mike Klein in the Hollywood satire The TV Set. In 2006, Duchovny was one of many famous voices to take part in Queer Duck: The Movie, before beginning his next great TV journey as lead Hank Moody on Californication in 2007, which ran for seven seasons on Showtime. That same year, Duchovny played the late husband to Halle Berry’s character in Things We Lost in the Fire, and starred in the creepy French horror film The Secret.

In 2008, Duchovny returned to Mulder for the first time in live-action, starring in The X-Files: I Want to Believe movie. The next year, Duchovny starred alongside Demi Moore in the consumerism comedy The Joneses, followed over the next few years by the indie flicks Goats, Phantom, and Louder Than Words. Beginning in 2015, Duchovny starred for two seasons on the 1960s crime drama Aquarius, which saw him encounter Charles Manson. Duchovny has since guest starred alongside Californication co-star Pamela Adlon on Better Things, returned as Denise Bryson on Twin Peaks season 3, and starred in two revival seasons of The X-Files. Next up, he’ll appear in a remake of 1990s teenage witch movie The Craft.
