One fan has made augmented reality versions of classic Pokémon starter cards, and they look absolutely fantastic. The first original three starters in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue, Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle, are still incredibly popular characters among fans of the long-running franchise, and the three of them (along with their respective evolutionary forms) are the very first entries in the Pokédex, a massive catalog containing information about every Pokémon ever.

However, the most recent entries in the Pokémon franchise, Pokémon Sword and Shield, drew lots of criticism from fans when it was announced the game would be ignoring many of the Pokémon featured in the National Dex, and recently the Pokemon Company had to apologize for including the now-absent Dewgong in Twilight Wings, a show which was created to help promote Pokémon Sword and Shield. However, desipte the lack of many fan-favorite Pokémon, Nintendo’s most recent entries have still sold very well, and developer Game Freak has promised more missing Pokémon will be added back into the game soon.

Recently, a Pokémon fan and user who goes by the name u/yahyayyasha on Reddit posted a video showcasing their new design for an augmented reality Pokémon card deck, and it looks awesome. By utilizing programs like Blender, Unity, and Vuforia, u/yahyayyasha created moving, flickering neon overlays for all three of the original Kanto starter Pokémon. Take a look at the video below:

As noted by many Redditors in the comments below the video, the neon look u/yahyayyasha applied to the augmented reality Pokémon starter cards is very reminiscent of the recent animated film Detective Pikachu, which also utilized a similar color scheme. Many other comments commended the user for their creation, with lots of them hoping that the Pokemon Company takes the hint and hires u/yahyayyasha to make a completely licensed version. So far, it appears like the only other AR Pokémon design the user has created has been for Pikachu, but they said they would be open to doing more if they did end up getting hired.

While augmented reality hasn’t caught on as quick as companies like Google may have hoped, fan-made projects like the one above shows that there can be some pretty neat things done in AR, even if the technology is still in its early stages. These Pokémon cards give a whole new meaning to the world “holographic,” and should definitely be included as an official release for a new Detective Pikachu card set. Now players just have to convince u/yahyayyasha to start working on battle animations, because nothing would be cooler than fighting with Pokémon cards in AR and having the cards actually move around and battle each other.
