FromSoftware’s Dark Souls is one of the most unforgiving franchises in existence, and its aesthetic has even spawned its own genre. Despite having official sequels of its own, another fan-made successor was built to pick up where the first game ended, and we can now watch the first 18 minutes of the ambitious mod.

Uploaded to the mod’s official YouTube account, the prologue of Dark Souls: Nightfall promises a unique continuation of the story from a talented team. Meowmaritus and Grimrukh – the creator of the Daughters of Ash mod – lead Team Nightfall by aiding the mod’s main quest design, world design, writing, maps, animation, and more. A handful of other well-known, Dark Souls modders have worked tirelessly to create a playable mod at FromSoftware’s standard, and the first 18 minutes of Nightfall gives us a substantial taste of what’s to come.

Nightfall has no planned release date, but its concept is something to look forward to. Equipped with a new story, original characters, and a fresh-faced foe, Nightfall begins with the Kiln of the First Flame – the location of Dark Souls’ final boss. The unofficial sequel’s new protagonist is a hollow – which inspired the mod’s title – traversing the Age of Darkness in Lordran. The prologue features gameplay up to the first original enemy, the Blistering Demon, which is based on the Taurus Demon but features a faster moveset to its inspiration.

While the mod features many environments that made the game tick before, it also brings a slew of new narratives and mechanics to the gothic title. One of Nightfall’s prominent changes is the introduction of a new combat mechanic. You can choose to lean on quick attacks and play more hastily with similar health replenishment to Bloodborne, or choose healing as a priority by sacrificing an offensive approach. Additional voice acting and original music has also been added to the mod, as well as a day-night cycle, which adds to its individuality.

In more behind-the-scenes news, Sony Corporation recently formed a capital alliance with Kadokawa Corporation – which owns Dark Souls developer FromSoftware. The agreement will give Sony and mobile company CyberAgent a 1.93% stake in the Japanese company.
