No. No, you cannot hack a zombie. But hacking can be a surprisingly useful skill in the zombie apocalypse, as this 20-minute gameplay trailer for the upcoming Watch Dogs Legion zombies mode shows.
IGN brings us this exclusive first look at Watch Dogs Legion Of The Dead, the new zombies game mode coming to Watch Dogs Legion. Currently in alpha for the PC version only, Legion of the Dead will arrive with Watch Dogs Legion’s title update 4.5, which is coming tomorrow.
Watch Dogs Legion Of The Dead is a co-op, PvE mode for up to four players. IGN calls it a “roguelite,” but there’s nothing in the 20-minute gameplay footage that shows any amount of rogueliteness, so we’re assuming that there’s going to be some sort of respawn system if you die.
The objective for the four-player team is to find eight survival packages before making their way to a helicopter extraction point. London has been entirely overrun with zombies and the military has been called in to enforce a quarantine, meaning you’ll have to deal with brain-eating undead as well as angry people with guns.
The zombies seem to be the slow variety, but they can lunge with extreme speed if they get too close. There’s also a lot of them, so it can be really hard to avoid getting too close. It looks like there’s only one type of zombie in Watch Dogs Legion Of the Dead so far, but this game mode is still in alpha, so that might change over the course of development.
Your squad’s hacking abilities might not be too useful for deterring zombies, but they’re far from useless. At one point, a player hacks into a car and drives it through a crowd of zombies remotely, saving valuable ammunition.
“I think there’s something inherently fun about playing with zombies, beyond the instant gratification of destroying them,” Legion game online director Jean-Pascal Cambiotti told IGN. “We were inspired by the multiple portrayals of zombies across popular culture, and in the game, we made the decision to make zombies slower but lethal.”
Watch Dogs Legion Of The Dead hits PC platform users tomorrow, while Watch Dogs: Legion Bloodline arrives later this summer with two old-school Watch Dogs protagonists.
