UPDATE: The Avengers 4 trailer has been released. Watch it here!

It’s taking a long time for the Avengers 4 trailer to release, but why is that? Anthony and Joe Russo’s 2019 Marvel installment is one of the most anticipated movie releases of all time, and it makes sense considering everything that the sequel represents. Avengers 4 is being billed as the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first saga, which began a decade ago with Iron Man – and many of the characters that audiences have come to love are leaving the MCU after Avengers 4.

Plus, Avengers 4 is the first Marvel property – movie or TV show – to take place after the events of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and the first property to truly show the effects of Thanos’ snap, which wiped out half the universe. Unlike in previous years in which there were multiple movies and TV shows that show the aftermath of the MCU’s biggest events, this is the first time that audiences are waiting to see how the franchise’s most devastating event will change the MCU forever. And that’s why fans are not only waiting to see the Avengers 4 trailer but to find out just what Avengers 4’s title even is.

While Marvel is one studio among many, it’s still part of The Walt Disney Studios’ brand, which means their marketing strategy is dependent on a variety of factors, not least of which relies on other Disney movies. It was widely believed that the first Avengers 4 trailer would arrive either on or around Thanksgiving in late November. When that didn’t happen, it was then assumed that the Avengers 4 trailer would release on the anniversary of the first Avengers: Infinity War trailer on November 30. That, again, didn’t happen, which has resulted in even more questions.

Instead, people got trailers for The Lion King and Artemis Fowl, two Disney movies that are scheduled to release after Avengers 4. Then, the second trailer for Captain Marvel debuted on Monday. While that may have disappointed people waiting for the Avengers 4 trailer, putting the new Captain Marvel trailer ahead of Avengers 4 was a smart idea. So, finding the appropriate time to release the Avengers 4 trailer, without overshadowing anything else from Marvel Studios or Disney as a whole was tricky. Then there was also the unexpected death of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush, whose state funeral (which allows the public to take part in a national day of mourning) was held on December 5, the original rumored release date for the Avengers 4 trailer.

Bottom line: the Avengers 4 trailer is taking so long to release because there are a number of things that needed to come first before it debuted. But all in all, the trailer is reportedly releasing a few days after it was “supposed” to release, and only a week later from when the Avengers: Infinity War trailer released last year. Sure, it’s great to get promotional materials several months in advance, but Avengers 4 is still several months away, so Marvel has plenty of time to market the movie how they see fit.
