Wilson Fisk, a.k.a The Kingpin, appears to be the secret villain of Hawkeye and the power behind the bumbling Tracksuit Mafia, but it remains a mystery why he wanted The Avengers watch in Hawkeye episode 1. Several notable Avengers-related items were auctioned off in the first episode, “Never Meet Your Heroes,” but a mysterious watch was targeted by the Tracksuit Mafia members, highlighting its importance. There are several potential reasons why Wilson Fisk might want the watch, encompassing both symbolic and practical uses.

Hawkeye adapts elements of Matt Fraction’s beloved run of Marvels’ Hawkeye comic from 2012, introducing Kate Bishop, Lucky (the Pizza Dog), and the Tracksuit Mafia to the MCU. The series also featured the MCU debut of Maya Lopez, a.k.a Echo, a character who originated in Daredevil comics and is intrinsically tied to Kingpin. In Hawkeye, Lopez appears to be taken under the wing of Wilson Fisk, and since she leads the Tracksuit Mafia in the MCU, that would make them part of Fisk’s criminal empire.

Several items were recovered from the wreckage of the Avengers compound in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, including, most notably the suit and retractable sword of Ronin, Clint Barton’s vengeful persona who terrorized the criminal underworld following Thanos’ snap. While Kate Bishop stole the Ronin suit and Jack Duquesne stole the sword, the Kingpin’s lackeys wanted a watch, indicating that it held great monetary or symbolic value, or that it was more than a simple wristwatch. Either way, the villain’s determination to seize the watch above all else indicates that there was more to it than immediately meets the eye, imbuing it with a special significance.

The Avengers as an organization seemed to have disbanded at the end of Endgame, and while a new iteration of the team will most likely form throughout Phase 4, the general populace isn’t quite sure whether or not The Avengers exist anymore, a point highlighted in lighthearted dialogue in Spider-Man: Far From Home. With this in mind, a watch belonging to a deceased Avenger, most likely Tony Stark (referencing Robert Downy Jr’s watch collection), would be a significant status symbol for a criminal leader such as Fisk.

Assuming that the watch belonged to Stark, it might also do far more than tell time. Tony Stark famously prepared for all scenarios, carrying Iron Man technology within disguised briefcases and hidden compartments of his vehicles and residences. In Captain America: Civil War, Stark hid an armored Iron Man hand repulsor within a wristwatch, using its weaponry to stun a brainwashed Bucky Barnes and blocking a bullet with its durable armor. Fisk may want a hidden Iron Man gauntlet as a covert self-defense weapon (referencing his suit and cane’s hidden weaponry in the comics). He might also seek to reverse engineer Stark tech for his forces.

A simpler explanation is simply that the watch is valuable and highly sought after, and Fisk wasn’t interested in acquiring the watch via a purchase, so he sent his men to a black-market auction to steal it. Perhaps it’s not the watch itself that Fisk sees as a status symbol, but rather the show of force used to acquire it. Echo’s new origin story implies that The Kingpin will appear on Hawkeye sooner or later, and his reason for wanting the Avengers watch may be revealed as well.
