If you’re American enough to have been able to see the new Mortal Kombat film yet, you may still be wondering what happened to series staple, Johnny Cage. An almost-ever present figure in the notorious fighting game series, Mortal Kombat (2021) marked the first spin-off film he didn’t appear in.

There was a method to all of this. According to producer Todd Garner, Johnny’s boisterous personality was just too much to squeeze in alongside fellow larger-than-life combatant, Kano—so it was one or the other, and they went with the Aussie.

But with rumors of a sequel already up in the air, fans are sharing their fancasts. One was bolder than the rest, tagging Mortal Kombat co-creator, Ed Boon directly, to vote for himself.

WWE star, The Miz, tweeted a mock up of himself as the deadly film star. The image went along with the caption: “No Johnny Cage? I AM the special effects. Let me do the casting for you. Say cheese.”

The Miz is far from the only one behind this casting decision, with many in the replies pointing out the uncanny resemblance between the two, particularly with Johnny’s Mortal Kombat 11 model.

This daring move did in fact get a response from the man himself, Ed Boon, who responded by simply saying: “Guy makes a compelling case”.

While he may have mizzed out on the opportunity to play Johnny this time, the professional wrestler may get his chance yet. Sub Zero actor, Joe Taslim, recently revealed that he’s already signed on for a total of four Mortal Kombat films. He added, “if the first part is successful, maybe the studio will make some more.”

But The Miz may have some fierce competition. Other names have been tossed around by the film’s cast as to who should take the role of Johnny in a potential sequel. Kano actor, Josh Lawson, proposed James Marsden (Sonic the Hedgehog, X-Men). On the other hand, Lewis Tan (who plays original character, Cole Young) suggested both martial artist Scott Adkins, as well as the MCU’s Chris Pratt.

Mortal Kombat (2021) has seen a staggered release worldwide since early April, and premiered in the United States earlier this week. It is available in theaters and on HBO Max.
