The beginnings of the secret organization serving Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter are set in the late sixties to early seventies when the Dark Lord had just begun his bid to manipulate the Wizarding World to suit his warped philosophy. As Dumbledore states, they were first composed of “a group of dedicated friends”, a “motley collection” that “had a kind of dark glamor.”

The two things that are common to nearly every single Death Eater are their unabiding worship of their master, as well as a powerful belief that magic belongs only to those of “pure blood”. In terms of fighting strength, on the other hand, there is a clear demarcation between those who are mediocre and those who are almost as terrifying as Lord Voldemort himself.

10 Igor Karkaroff

It’s not known how Karkaroff managed to secure himself the prestigious position of Headmaster at a wizarding school, given his cowardly behavior during the Triwizard Tournament.

However, he does manage to escape being caught for nearly half a year by Aurors, and twice that time successfully avoiding his previous master. This signifies that Karkaroff must have been an accomplished Dark Wizard in his youth, and still retains some of that power.

9 Draco Malfoy

Draco’s internal turmoil at being forced into servitude for Voldemort has an effect in preventing the full blossoming of his talent. To be fair, very few people are able to shine when the specter of death looms over their heads and their family’s.

His role in Dumbledore’s death is extremely consequential, however, doomed to failure all his prior attempts had been. Furthermore, Draco has shown himself capable of casting Unforgivable Curses effortlessly (except, of course, Avada Kedavra.)

8 The Carrows

Alecto and Amycus Carrow, a pair of Death Eater siblings, are as aggressive and brutal as they are strong, not to mention how much fun they have in abusing their power.

They are “hired” together as Hogwarts’ Deputy Headmasters, directly under Snape’s authority, where they spend their time instructing pupils in Dark Magic (and gleefully punishing those who do not comply.) While Amycus and Alecto are more than proficient to handle a bunch of teenagers in real combat, they quail before the incandescent rage of Professor McGonagall.

7 Lucius Malfoy

Lucius Malfoy’s position as part of Voldemort’s most prized minions is proof of both his devotion and his magical talents. As a combatant, he prefers the delicate approach in comparison with his colleagues’ usually forceful methods, which is what makes him even more threatening.

In addition to his wizarding expertise, Lucius is a supremely adroit diplomat, seeing how easily he can control the situation by offering either threats or money.

6 Antonin Dolohov

Antonin Dolohov ranks among the most impressive of Lord Voldemort’s crowd, in part due to his efforts in the First Wizarding War. For instance, he is responsible for the deaths of Fabian and Gideon Prewett, Molly Weasley’s brothers, and rather proficient combatants in their own right.

Dolohov matches the joint forces of Hermione, Neville, and Harry simultaneously, later going up against (and overwhelming) Auror Moody. His final kill is Remus Lupin, followed by which he is quickly brought down by Flitwick.

5 Peter Pettigrew

Peter Pettigrew comes off as a groveling groupie, fit only for the most menial jobs. Nevertheless, he secures Voldemort’s wand after his first destruction, preserves it for twelve years, camouflages himself in the form of a rat, and successfully prepares a potion to bring the Dark Lord back to life.

Also, Pettigrew’s attempt at faking his own death required some rather quick thinking and overpowering magic on his part. Finally, he murders Cedric Diggory using Voldemort’s wand, as well as performing other minor magical acts, despite the rules imposed by wandlore and how allegiances work.

4 Fenrir Greyback

Fenrir Greyback is terrifying in werewolf form, but his magical prowess is nothing to be scoffed at. The vast amounts of strength contained within his body permit him to perform acts of extreme destruction.

In addition, he is the least likely to show compassion towards his victims, treating them as prey to consume rather than targets to simply kill. In the end, it takes Neville and Ron’s best to conclude his time as a Death Eater once and for all.

3 Barty Crouch, Jr.

Barty Crouch, Jr. is most remarkable not for his dueling capacity or potioneering or even his unbridled reverence for Voldemort. It’s the fact that he needs nothing more than a few drops of Polyjuice to manipulate the entirety of Hogwarts and the Ministry, leaving even Dumbledore in the dark until he makes a fatal mistake at the very end of the Dark Tournament.

Ironically, Crouch’s stint as the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor actually helped his students learn about the malice ingrained in the use of Dark Magic, especially the Unforgivable Curses.

2 Severus Snape

Snape’s wisdom and awareness are unparalleled; his mastery extended across every field, from potions to Occlumency, from Charms to Transfiguration, from Dark Magic to defending against it.

His role as a double agent is so effective that the whole Order refuses to believe that he ever worked for Voldemort (which is exactly how Dumbledore plans it, anyway.) Snape, before his death, also learns the latest advancement in magical technique from his master: “Unsupported Flight.”

1 Bellatrix Lestrange

Under the guidance of Lord Voldemort, Bellatrix grows to become his favored lieutenant, as much for her expansive knowledge of magical styles as for her shamelessness when it comes to using her spells against innocent people.

In her early years, she manages to snare Alice and Frank Longbottom and murders Sirius (although it’s important to note that the latter fails to take her seriously in the middle of their fight.) In fact, when Dumbledore arrives at the Ministry, he strings the Death Eaters together within seconds, but Bellatrix somehow deflects every spell he flings at her.
