Yes, the beautiful guitar that we see our tortured protagonist carrying around in The Last of Us Part II can be yours, but it’ll cost you. As we play through the story of The Last of Us and strum some quick chords on Ellie’s guitar as we guide her through memories of days-gone-by, we can easily fall in love with the idea of owning our own guitar as we ourselves reminisce about better days–days before the (probably) impending zombie outbreak of 2020. While owning one of these guitars may not cost you as much as Ellie paid, it is still going to set you back $2,300, with a scaled-down version for just $699.

Unfortunately, it appears that Joel (and by extension Ellie) took his instruments seriously. The real-life base model of the guitar that you play in-game is going to cost you at least $1,000–and that’s for a used model. A brand new, off-the-shelf guitar costs $1,999 without all of the customizations, so really, the $2,300 price tag isn’t that bad.

Taylor guitars announced on June 18th that they were releasing two guitar models in conjunction with the release of The Last of Us Part II. Working with developer Naughty Dog, Taylor is providing customers with a one-to-one replica of the guitar that you see in-game, complete with an African ebony fretboard and the signature tobacco sunburst finish that we have become accustomed to. When you buy it, you’ll also receive a Taylor Deluxe hardshell case to protect your new memorabilia. The GS mini, on the other hand, is not featured in-game but does have Ellie’s tattoo emblazoned on a black body finish. This model will cost you significantly less and also comes with a hardshell gig-bag to protect it.

If you aren’t prepared to spend that kind of money, you can still play that guitar in the game. You can learn the names and sounds of some chords with Ellie as you play throughout the game. During rare moments of quiet, you can take as much time as you like to use the PS controller’s touchpad to strum along and listen to the hauntingly beautiful sounds of the guitar.

If you don’t know how to play, dropping $2,300 on a guitar might be a little much, however, the idea that it represents and the legacy that you can pass on is priceless. If you’re going to buy a branded piece of merch, a functioning instrument–particularly of this quality–is hands down the best way to show your love for the game, it’s developers, and fellow fans in the music world.
