*Warning! Spoilers for season 1 ahead!*

Throughout Only Murders in the Building, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel all had their own issues they were dealing with in their personal lives. Mabel had a dark secret about Tim Kono and Oliver didn’t have the best relationship with his son and was financially strapped. Then there was Charles.

Like his new friends, Charles was also suffering in his personal life. Despite all the quirky jokes and amazing guest stars, it’s hard to ignore the sad things that have happened to Charles. Although he was once a successful actor who now lived in a very swanky apartment in New York City, Charles bottled up a lot of his emotions and was undoubtedly lonely. Had it not been for his podcast and new friends, Charles could have carried on a very sad path.

The Ending Of His Last Relationship Was Abrupt

No one knew about Charles’ relationship status at the start. The first episode showed three of the main characters in their own stunning apartments and Charles seemed comfortable in his own space. It wasn’t until he went on a date with Jan that viewers learned more about his past relationship.

Apparently, Charles’s last relationship was with a woman named Emma. Charles wanted to impress her and did things outside of his comfort zone, even though it wasn’t the real him. Eventually, Emma grew bored of the true Charles and abandoned him on a family cruise that he planned for their anniversary. After she left the cruise ship, Charles spent five of the remaining days alone in sadness. A happy time turned into heartbreak and scarred him. Emma was never shown in season 1, but it’s a storyline that could expose itself in season 2.

The Loss Of Lucy

Early on in season 1, Charles was seen making omelet after omelet and throwing it in the trash. Shortly after, an unnamed neighbor told Charles that he could smell the eggs he was making from across the hall and that it reminded him of Lucy. The look of pain that went across Charles’s face made viewers wonder who Lucy was.

In a plot twist, Lucy wasn’t an ex-girlfriend or wife, it was his ex’s seven-year-old daughter. He made her eggs every morning and it became one of their favorite bonding moments. Charles really loved Lucy and was destroyed when Emma took her away. By the end of the series, Charles worked up the courage to reach out to Lucy but it was still heartbreaking how torn up he was over her absence.

People Can’t Stand His Personality

As endearing and kind as Charles is, not too many people were fond of him. His one neighbor was continually seen giving him the middle finger, the building manager despised him because he wasn’t a good tipper, and people didn’t respond well to his random conversations.

However, deep down he was a good man. His silly quotes summed up his personality, but not everyone was willing to get to know him better. It even took Oliver and Mabel a while to warm up to his quirky jokes and excitement for boring things.

His Social Awkwardness Doesn’t Do Him Any Favors

Speaking of people disliking Charles for simply being himself… Charles tends to be socially awkward and anxious. He doesn’t get out much and focused most of his life on his career, which could be why he doesn’t always know how to act around others.

In Charles’s opening scene, he’s seen talking to two fans of his. The one told Charles that this father had ALS and that his memory wasn’t what it used to be. When Charles tried breaking the tension, it only made it more awkward. Sadly, Charles is aware of the effect he has on people and doesn’t understand why so many don’t want to be around him.

Jan Wasn’t Who He Thought She Was

Charles met his neighbor, Jan, on an elevator and immediately hit it off with her. She understood his silly sense of humor and wasn’t put off by his awkwardness. In fact, she loved it. The two began dating and she seemed like the only person who actually understood Charles. Fans loved Jan until she became a suspect in the murder against Tim Kono.

And sadly, that’s exactly who she was — a murderer and a liar. Jan lied about her position with the orchestra and lived a double life as a woman who killed her exes. She attempted to kill Charles but he luckily pulled through. While he was happy to be alive, he grieved the loss of his relationship.

His Career Was In The Gutter

It’s known early on that Charles is an older actor who used to be incredibly popular in years prior. He is best known for his character Brazzos, which appeared to be the only thing people recognized him from. In passing, Charles also mentioned that most of the pilots he shot never came to be because he didn’t think he tested well in auditions.

In one scene, he was upset that he had to even audition for a role because, at that point in his career, roles should be given to him. Knowing that his career wasn’t where it used to be was sad to watch for a man who still loved his craft. In season 2, it’s theorized that Charles gets a second act and reprises his role of Brazzos, giving him a happier ending than season 1 gave him.

He’s Been Alone For 28 Years

Charles is one of the more intelligent characters in Only Murders in the Building, as his level-headed thinking helped crack many questions the trio had in the murder of Tim Kono. However, as bright and loving as Charles was, he told Mabel he’s been alone for most of the past 28 years.

He told her about his past and that many people compared him to his dad while growing up. The only problem is that is his dad was horrible to his mom and treated them both as if they were small. In a sad realization, Charles would rather be alone than be like his dad.

Their Podcast And Its Success

At first, Charles thought he was starting a podcast with Oliver and Mabel for fun. After being a part of failed projects, it was fun for him to finally be a part of something that brought life to his eyes again. However, Charles learned real quick how hard it was to make a podcast successful.

After meeting two men at a gas station who also had their own podcast, Charles learned how poorly there’s performed next to a podcast with 60,000 subscribers and awards. Only Murders in the Building was potentially another flop for his career. The outcome of the podcast won’t come to be until season 2.
