Grass-type Pokémon are not particularly well-known for their strength and power compared to their Water and Fire counterparts but there are certainly plenty that are good battlers in the anime.

There are not a lot of Grass-typed Legendaries or significantly powerful Pokémon but the Grass-type starters are among some of the strongest in the anime, even if it isn’t necessarily the same in the games.

10 If Roserade Is Going Down It’ll Take An Opponent Down With It

In “Barry’s Busting Out All Over!”, Barry and Ash battle with Barry using a Roserade. Despite it being Grass-Poison dual typing, it defeats Ash’s Chimchar by focusing on hitting a barrage of Poison Jabs to avoid any type disadvantage.

Also in Sinnoh, Gardenia uses a Roserade as her last Pokémon in a Gym battle against Ash, where it defeats his Turtwig before losing to his Aipom. Roserade appears to be a Pokémon that surprises opponents and will take a Pokémon down before the opposing trainer figures out a strategy to deal with it.

9 Abomasnow Can Be A Handful If There Is No Super-Effective Counter For It

Pokémon 10 Best GrassTypes In The Anime Ranked

Abomasnow is a bulky dual Grass and Ice type Pokémon that just has to hope it avoids Fire-types. In Diamond & Pearl, Candice the Snowpoint City Gym leader, has an Abomasnow that causes Ash all sorts of problems, knocking out his Staraptor and Grotle before finally being defeated by Ash’s Chimchar.

However, in Kalos, the Ice-type Gym leader Wulfric’s Abomasnow is defeated much more easily with Ash’s Hawlucha. If it faces a Pokémon with no type advantages, it can be a valuable member of any Pokémon team.

8 Kartana Likes To Slice Everything

Pokémon 10 Best GrassTypes In The Anime Ranked

Appearing in Pokémon Sun & Moon, Kartana is an Ultra Beast, a Pokémon from another dimension, with a scarily sharp and precise offense, although it doesn’t demonstrate this in battle in the anime.

Instead, it saves Ash and friends by slicing a meteor that is approaching the Pokémon school in half. The other Ultra Beasts were either more desperate to fight anyone or just to return home, but Kartana had a certain level of curiosity for this world, exploring and harmlessly cutting things.

7 Serperior Is Quick And Difficult To Counter

Pokémon 10 Best GrassTypes In The Anime Ranked

In the preliminary rounds of the Vertress Conference in Unova, Ash faces his rival Trip, having not beaten him yet. Pikachu battles Trip’s Serperior and appears to be completely outmatched. Serperior is very fast and agile. Utilizing its serpentine body, it has a devastating and frustrating move set including Dragon Tail, Wrap and Energy Ball.

Until Pikachu manages to free itself from Serperior’s Wrap with several Iron Tails, Trip appears to have the bout won. Ultimately, Pikachu defeats Serperior, but this battle showed that the final evolution of Snivy would be a good addition to most teams.

6 Ash’s Rowlet Is Unique And Can Out-Battle Its Evolution

When Ash and Hau face off in the Alolan Pokémon League, the Rowlet evolution line is on show for all to see with Ash’s Rowlet versus Hau’s Decidueye. Being a part Ghost-type gives Decidueye an unusual but intriguing move set for a starter evolution line.

Its power is substantial but Rowlet manages to stay competitive until it decides to fall asleep. After Hala prevents the match from being stopped, Ash’s Rowlet uses Feather Dance for the first time, allowing it to hit Brave Bird for the win. A Rowlet defeating its superior in its own evolution line shows how powerful it is.

5 Bayleef Carries Ash Through Parts Of His Johto Journey

Pokémon 10 Best GrassTypes In The Anime Ranked

During Ash’s adventures in Johto, Bayleef is one of his best Pokémon, even single-handedly defeating Cianwood’s Fighting-type Gym leader Chuck, when Pikachu is defeated by Chuck’s Poliwrath.

It battles ferociously despite its cute appearance and always seems to enjoy being the underdog in a battle. At the Johto Pokémon League, it shows innovative offense to defeat Harrison’s Houndoom despite the type disadvantage, using Vine Whip to clamp its jaw shut before using Body Slam to finish it. It eventually loses to a Blaziken but its tenacity and courage is to be applauded.

4 Bulbasaur’s Service And Loyalty To Ash Is Clear For All To See

Pokémon 10 Best GrassTypes In The Anime Ranked

Ash’s Bulbasaur is known worldwide for being one of Ash’s most loyal, dependable and used Pokémon companions alongside Squirtle and Charizard, but obviously behind Pikachu. In the anime, it gets to the point that Bulbasaur is so strong that it can keep up and defeat most opponents.

Ash is notorious for not evolving Pokémon and getting the best of their early evolution stages but it doesn’t change the fact that he could have ended up with a Venusaur as a part of his team. Ash faces many Venusaur on his travels, including against Professor Kukui in their exhibition match at the Alolan Pokémon League, where Kukui’s Venusaur defeated Ash’s Rowlet, before losing to Torracat.

3 Torterra May Be Slow, But It Makes Up For It With Extra Power

Pokémon 10 Best GrassTypes In The Anime Ranked

In the Diamond & Pearl series, both Ash and Paul own a Torterra, although Ash’s needed help from Paul’s before getting to its final evolution form. In “Aiding the Enemy!”, Ash’s Turtwig evolves when in a pinch against Paul, but it isn’t all positive news. The newly evolved Grotle is dismayed at its newfound lack of speed, as it can’t battle as it always has done.

Paul’s Torterra coaches Grotle and teaches it how to adapt to being bigger and utilize its newly found strength. Torterra is a powerful Pokémon and, for what it lacks in speed, it makes up for in brute strength and its dual Ground-Grass typing.

2 Celebi’s Psychic Capabilities Are Second To None

Pokémon 10 Best GrassTypes In The Anime Ranked

Throughout all of Celebi’s anime and movie appearances it’s theme is always time travel. Celebi is a powerful Mythical Pokémon and although it doesn’t show too much in terms of battling, the fact that it can meddle with time and transport people back and forth is an indication of what it is capable of.

Its dual typing of Grass and Psychic is an unusual combination but allows for an interesting move set, mainly involving support and healing moves.

1 Grovyle And Sceptile Are Proven Warriors And Would Benefit Any Team

In the Ruby & Sapphire series, Ash’s Grovyle is one of his most reliable and powerful teammates, especially excelling at the Hoenn Pokémon League, where it helps apply some of his Ash’s most ambitious strategies. It evolves into Sceptile in a later series.

Sceptile is also used by Sawyer and Tyson, with the latter using one against Ash at the same tournament. Sawyer’s Sceptile, however, is capable of Mega Evolution which changes it to part Dragon-type. Sceptile’s combination of power and speed make it arguably the best Grass-type out there.
