Pokémons Ash May Finally Beat His Most Unfair Opponent

The Pokémon anime feels as if it’s entering Ash’s final run as protagonist of the series. If Ash’s time is nigh, he may have a chance to settle one final score before the end, and it involves beating an unfair opponent from the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl seasons.

Most series of the Pokémon anime have followed the same formula: Ash travels to a new region from the most recent mainline games, beats the Gyms, fights the evil team, makes it to the League, then loses during the final tournament. This was the status quo until 2019, when Ash won the Alola League. And rather than traveling straight to the Galar region from Pokémon Sword and Shield, the anime has taken a new approach. The current series, Pokémon Journeys, involves Ash and a boy named Goh traveling the entire Pokémon world. While Goh tries to catch them all, Ash competes in the World Coronation Series with trainers from around the globe.

Ash has had some ridiculous losses over the course of the Pokémon anime, but there is one that still frustrates fans to this day, as it rendered his journey pointless: Ash was absolutely decimated in the Sinnoh region by a trainer who used Legendary Pokémon in battle.

Pokémon: Ash’s Most Unfair Battle Against Tobias & His Legendaries

After a long-fought run in the Sinnoh region, Ash made it to the semi-finals of the Lily of the Valley Conference. It was here that he faced a mysterious trainer named Tobias. Legendary Pokémon have occasionally made appearances in the anime, but they generally receive starring roles in the Pokémon movies. Tobias just happened to have a Darkrai and a Latios on his team. These two Pokémon quickly defeated all six of Ash’s, including Pikachu. Tobias never even revealed his remaining four Pokémon, and he has yet to make another appearance in the Pokémon anime.

There are many short-lived characters in the Pokémon anime, but there is a chance Tobias could return. If rumors of the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes are true, The Pokémon Company will want to promote the Sinnoh region again in the anime. The structure of Pokémon Journeys makes it easy for Ash to go back to Sinnoh, and the World Coronation Series gives him a framework to challenge Tobias again.

So, why should Ash fare any better, now, than he did the last time he faced Tobias? The main difference is his team. Ash currently has a team of six incredibly powerful Pokémon that wouldn’t look out of place in a real-world competitive match. Ash has a Dragonite, Dracovish, Gengar, Lucario, Galarian Farfetch’d (which will likely evolve into Sirfetch’d), and Pikachu, which has a Gigantamax form. Tobias’ victory in the Lily of the Valley Conference should allow him to enter the World Coronation Series, but his battle against Ash won’t be so one-sided this time, especially as Ash is now a League Champion himself. Fans will have to wait and see if the Pokémon franchise will let Ash finally get a win over his most unfair opponent.
