While it is one of the most controversial and divisive lineages of Star Wars content ever to be released in the franchise’s forty-plus year history, Lucasfilm and Disney’s sequel trilogy has so much brilliance throughout its three movies. Although inconsistent, the characters are phenomenal, and many ideas presented throughout are excellent. Then, of course, there is the action.

The action is up and down, with some of it not managing to capture the balance with an emotional impact like past Star Wars has. Yet, this is nothing new; the prequel trilogy’s action is often lambasted for its reliance on style over substance. Nevertheless, throughout the trilogy, there are many battles, and, if nothing else, they are all fun. Plus, when at their best, they are breathtaking and gut-punching.

10 Battle Of Takodana

Star Wars The 10 Best Sequel Trilogy Battles Ranked

The Battle of Takodana comes in The Force Awakens when the First Order destroys Maz Kanata’s castle and attempts to capture BB-8. It is short and sweet and is a great showcase for the new Resistance characters, specifically Poe Dameron.

When Black Squadron comes flying in to save the day and Poe destroys multiple TIE Fighters in a matter of seconds, it is a massive fist-pump moment. Throw in Finn’s battle with FN-2199 and Han using Chewie’s bowcaster, and you have an entertaining—albeit relatively small-scale—battle.

9 Battle Of Starkiller Base

Going back to The Force Awakens, if there is anything that holds back the Battle of Starkiller Base, it is the familiarity that so many people take issue with throughout the entire movie, with obvious mirroring to the Battle of Yavin.

Nevertheless, the action is sleek, well shot, satisfying, and includes some solid moments throughout. Had the lightsaber battle and death of Han Solo been taken into account for this entry, it would likely be higher. However, in terms of the actual planetary battle and destruction of Starkiller Base, it is good, just not unbelievable.

8 Battle of Exegol

Star Wars The 10 Best Sequel Trilogy Battles Ranked

It may be harsh to put what is perhaps the biggest battle of the sequel trilogy in terms of scale so low, but it lacks so much in terms of satisfaction and emotional resonance. The action is thrilling undoubtedly, and moments like the Citizen’s Fleet showing up, Finn’s willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good, and more are are phenomenal. It is not a bad battle, but it does feel a bit rushed and is missing something that the novel details far better.

7 Battle Of Crait

Star Wars The 10 Best Sequel Trilogy Battles Ranked

There will be many people who simply cannot stand what goes down on Crait, as is the nature of Star Wars’ most divisive nature. However, between the encounter with Luke and Kylo and the assault of the First Order, it is a pretty phenomenal sequence.

The Resistance taking the fight to the First Order before retreating is fantastic. Finn’s nearly sacrifice was great before quickly becoming the worst part about the sequence. The power going straight to Kylo’s head showcasing his instability is wonderful. Throw in the Millennium Falcon getting some action, the reveal of Luke’s projection, and some hilarious quips from Luke and Hux, and this battle has nearly everything a fight of this nature should have.

6 Rey Vs. Kylo Ren Through The Force

Star Wars The 10 Best Sequel Trilogy Battles Ranked

No two characters have dueled more during the Skywalker saga than Rey and Kylo Ren. Obi-Wan and Vader, Luke and Vader, and Anakin/Obi-Wan and Count Dooku all had two battles in the films, while Kylo and Rey had two in The Rise Of Skywalker alone.

The first was undoubtedly one of the most unique lightsaber battles ever, with their dyad connection allowing them to see and duel each other while Kylo was on the surface of Kijimi and Rey was on Kylo’s ship. The battle is short but very cool; from the changing environments to Vader’s podium’s destruction, though it could have been higher had it been a more important, longer battle.

5 Bombing Run In TLJ

Star Wars The 10 Best Sequel Trilogy Battles Ranked

Undoubtedly the best dogfight of the sequel trilogy comes in the opening of The Last Jedi when Poe rashly leads a squadron of bombers to destroy the Dreadnought whose turrets he took out with BB-8.

If you include Kylo’s troops destroying the bridge and killing Admiral Ackbar and the evacuation to Crait, which led to one of the most visually gorgeous images in all of Star Wars, this could crack the top three. Just looking at the opening with Poe and the bombing run, though, is enough to get it this high, with the others not really being battles as much as one-sided short attacks.

4 Rey Vs. Kylo Ren On Kef Bir

Star Wars The 10 Best Sequel Trilogy Battles Ranked

The next three entries are all lightsaber battles involving Rey and Kylo Ren, and they are all pretty interchangeable, with personal taste having a lot to do with how each will be perceived.

Their duel on Kef-Bir, the water moon of Endor, is great. Kylo Ren shines as he overpowers and shows off more refined skill than Rey, with the character only losing due to the death of Leia. This, alongside Rey’s healing of Kylo, only add to the battle, and the aftermath with Kylo and the memory of Han is one of the Skywalker saga’s best and most powerful scenes.

3 Rey (& Finn) Vs. Kylo Ren In TFA

Star Wars The 10 Best Sequel Trilogy Battles Ranked

Due to the film’s marketing, many fans have felt cheated by Disney because Finn was not the primary Force user of the trilogy, with footage of his short duel with Kylo being shown in trailers during the build-up when it was actually Rey’s story.

Nevertheless, the fight between Finn and Kylo, which morphed into a duel between Rey and Kylo, was beautiful. Kylo survived a bowcaster bolt that would kill most people, and he still managed to show off a high level of raw power which an uninjured Rey managed to match. It is visually stunning and emotionally satisfying, definitely one of the best lightsaber duels of the Skywalker saga.

2 Rey & Ben Solo Vs. Emperor Palpatine

Star Wars The 10 Best Sequel Trilogy Battles Ranked

Rey and the newly-redeemed Ben Solo facing off against Emperor Palpatine couldn’t really be classified as a lightsaber battle, as Palpatine did not wield one, but it is still a fairly incredible fight.

There are many issues with Palpatine’s return, and, to a lesser extent, with Ben’s redemption and death, but looking at this fight as an isolated event shows some of the most powerful works of the sequel trilogy. It all stems from Rey; her battling with both Palpatine and herself, with Palpatine showing off unbelievable power, is great. Those final moments where Rey announces that she is the Jedi are breathtaking, and its climax alone earns its place high up the list.

1 Rey & Kylo Vs. The Praetorian Guards

As with everything to do with The Last Jedi, people have issues with the throne room duel, specifically the choreography, which, to professionals, is lackluster. That said, casual Star Wars fans had no problems overlooking the scene’s issues.

Rey and Kylo’s dyad is in full force, with the chemistry between the two radiating out of the scene and the action itself being sincerely edge of your seat stuff. The emotion is there, the visuals are there, the shock factor is still lingering from Snoke’s death, and, along with it being the best battle of the trilogy, it is one of the best scenes overall.
