Supergirl Season 2 Casts Teen Wolf’s Tyler Hoechlin as Superman
Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin has been cast as Superman in the first two episodes of the upcoming second season of Supergirl.

CBS series Supergirl is making the move to The CW for its second season, joining the network’s growing slate of TV shows based on DC Comics, most of which exist as part of a shared universe (or, in Supergirl’s case, multiverse). Obviously with a show like Supergirl the elephant in the room was always going to be her more famous cousin, Superman, who watches over Metropolis while Kara Danvers takes care of business in National City.
During the first season, Superman made several appearances but was only ever shown in silhouette, and often talked about in euphemistic terms (i.e. “the big guy”). That will change, however, as we recently learned that the first two episodes of Supergirl season 2 will feature Superman in a proper role – and now we know who will be playing him.
EW reports that Tyler Hoechlin – who is best known for his role as werewolf Derek Hale in MTV’s Teen Wolf, and more recently for starring in Richard Linklater’s film Everybody Wants Some!! – will play Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman in his two-episode appearance on Supergirl. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said of the casting choice:
“Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”
This isn’t Hoechlin’s first brush with the DC universe; before Ben Affleck was cast as Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Hoechlin was one of the actors rumored to be in the running to play the new Bruce Wayne. Fans of Teen Wolf might argue that Hoechlin is perhaps better suited to playing Batman rather than Superman, since his character on that show was the epitome of dark and brooding, but it will probably be more interesting to see the actor show off his range. Besides, with his black hair and strong jawline, he’s certainly a close fit to the Superman of the comics.
Though for now Superman is only set to appear in a couple of episodes, if Hoechlin’s version of the character proves popular then there’s every chance that Supergirl could bring him back as a recurring guest star. Who knows – perhaps one day Warner Bros. might even allow him to lead his own TV show; though the studio might prefer to keep Henry Cavill as “the” Superman, there are no plans yet for another Superman solo movie, and there are already both TV and movie versions of The Flash.
Supergirl season 2 will air at 8pm Mondays on The CW in Fall 2016, The Flash will air in the same timeslot on Tuesdays, Arrow on Wednesdays, and Legends of Tomorrow on Thursdays.
